第二期竞赛题目

写作题一:议论文写作Argumentative Writing)(10分)

Write a passage in response to the text below. You should state clearly your attitude towards charity campaigns like the ALS ice bucket challenge and explain your reasons for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the author’s opinion might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. You should write about 500 words.

This summer, the ALS (肌萎缩侧索硬化症,又称渐冻人症) ice bucket challenge (冰桶挑战) swept the world. Many ordinary people as well as famous business executives, pop singers, film stars, sports giants and political leaders all around the world have become involved. This campaign, which asked people to pour a bucket of ice cold water over themselves or donate to the ALS foundation, or both, has brought unprecedented (前所未有的) attention to the disease, ALS.

The response has been amazing and many charity organizations have benefited from increased public awareness and massive donations. Hits to the English Wikipedia's article on ALS grew from an average of 163,300 a month to 2.89 million in August alone. The ALS Association received $41.8 million in donations in less than a month. In China, the campaign raised more than 8.5 million yuan for the China-Dolls Center for Rare Disorders (CCRD) (瓷娃娃罕见病关爱中心) up to August 22nd, and the followers of CCRD on Sina Weibo increased more than 100 fold. The dynamic embodied in social network effected as the driving force in promoting the campaign and raising public awareness and donations to it.

Meanwhile, a number of criticisms have arisen accusing the campaign more of a worldwide internet carnival (狂欢) than genuine involvement in charitable activities. What attracted the public was the fun in viewing celebrities drenched and shivering in icy water rather than care for ALS patients. As the American TV personality Steve-O suggested, only Charlie Sheen and Bill Gates mentioned that the point is to donate money; others generally forgot to share donation information in their ice bucket challenge videos. On the Vice Media website, Arielle Pardes predicted “by the time the summer heat cools off and ice water no longer feels refreshing, people will have completely forgotten about ALS.”

写作题二:说明文写作(Expository Writing)(10分)
