Social networking sites have many advantages. You can find long lost friends, make new friends, interact with them, and find out about various places and their culture whilst sitting at your desk. These sites also help you to spread information and to advertise at a minimum cost. Perhaps chief among the “pros” of social networking sites is the ability for “average” people to learn about others with whom they may share crucial information and develop business and personal friendships. In fact, these sites offer everything to facilitate your online social life.

However, to many people, social networking sites bring more dangers and risks than advantages. The most glaring disadvantage is the risk of identity theft and fraud. The personal information of users can be used for illegal activities. Some dishonest people would pretend to be someone else and put false information on their online profiles. If you do not know a person face to face, it will be very difficult to know if you are being cheated. Also, there are increasingly cases of malicious (恶意的) actions in which false information, lies, personal details and even adapted photographs are spread on the Internet without permission and causing extreme embarrassment.

I clearly remember the day many years ago when I registered my first QQ account carefully and unskillfully, I never thought social network would be so helpful not only to myself but to people all over the world. Quite aware of the consequent damage it has brought as I am, on balance I hold the stance that the merits of social networking sites outweigh their demerits.

The threshold advantage of them is that it makes the impossible possible. As for me, it never occurred to me that I can actually get to know and even become friends with people from other countries. Thanks to various kinds of social websites and applications, I am acquainted with some foreigners who are very friendly and enjoy sharing their daily life with me. What’s more, we students do not have to travel to and fro on a daily basis, instead, we can devote their traveling time to study more. In addition, computers furnish an even richer variety of choices so that pupils do not have to be restrained to study subjects arbitrarily chosen by their universities or teachers. The last but not least, as a person who has an crazy obsession with traveling but don’t have enough time to complete my dreams, social networking sites provide me with all the information I want. Beautiful scenery and mysterious stories no longer seem to be totally unreal to me, they give me courage and motivation to never quit bearing a hope in my mind that someday I will be there and savor everything fantastic that the world has to offer.

As I bury myself in social networking sites, I realize that there does exist some obvious and even underlying harm, but as the famous old saying goes, “no pain, no gain”. As long as we equip ourselves with necessary skills to deal with these damages, we can safely relish the fun and assistance. The first rule we should stick to is that never exposing our true identity unless we are crystal clear that it’s safe. Once being exposed to the malicious people, our personal information can become a tool to threaten us or steal money from us. The second rule is that we should never trust strangers with regard to money sometimes we should even not trust our friends. Because nowadays it’s becoming much more easier to steal other’s account, so it’s likely that the friend who is asking you to lend him some money is not him at all.
