What builds a brand? What ruins one? After 131 years in the photography business, the famous film and camera company, Eastman Kodak Co. (柯达公司), filed for bankruptcy (破产) on January 19, 2012. Most people attributed its failure to its slowness to adapt to the digital age and poor leadership that lacked vision and consistency.

Dr. Kamal Munir, from the Cambridge Judge Business School, argued that there might be deeper causes. “For three quarters of the twentieth century, Kodak’s supreme success was not only developing new technology—the film camera—but creating a completely new mass market,” Kamal said. “Kodak made photography a popular pastime around the world. Kodak also played a big role in converting travel to tourism. The idea was that if you hadn’t brought back pictures from your vacation you might as well not have gone. For them, photography was about preserving memories for posterity (后代) and about sentiment.”

However, as Kamal noted, having played such a central role in creating meaning for photography, the company failed to understand that meaning had changed, from memories printed on paper to images shared by e-mail or on Facebook. What Kodak needed was a new business model for an environment in which people do not “preserve memories” but “share experiences”.

Plastic or cosmetic surgery has been widely accepted today. Many reported that their surgery did improve their chances of success. With the appearance more appealing, people tend to be more popular either among friends or in the workplace. Daniel S. Hamermesh, an economics professor, claimed in his book Beauty Pays that good-looking people enjoy more opportunities at work than plainer colleagues—such as party invites, business travel and office privileges. Besides, confidence has been greatly boosted during the beautifying process and, therefore, improves the happiness of people’s lives.

But many others argue that the confidence coming from a new nose or fake breasts may only be temporary. The psychological issues underlying people’s insecurity about their appearance, such as depression and anxiety, may be only temporarily alleviated (缓解) by surgery. This temporary confidence is nothing in comparison to real self-esteem, which generates from people’s approval of their own competence and wisdom instead of others’ approval of their appearance. In the long run, plain-looking people with real self-esteem are more possible to succeed than good-looking ones but with low self-esteem.
